The WELT Test
"WELT" stands for Warwick English Language Test. It is a good alternative to IELTS and TOEFL and it is accepted by the UK Universities of Aston*, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Brunel, Buckingham, Coventry, East Anglia, Exeter, Kingston, Liverpool, Liverpool JMU, Loughborough, Middlesex, Newcastle, Northumbria, Oxford Brookes, Portsmouth, Queen Mary London*, Queens Belfast, Wales (Swansea), Westminster, West of England (Bristol) and Warwick (of course!!!!). It is nearly a 3-hour test comprising three sections; Grammar & English Usage (1 hour), Writing (45 minutes) and Academic Reading (1 hour). Grades are A, B, C, D or E. The WELT is marked and graded by the University of Warwick. You can take the WELT very easily and usually get the result in 2 or 3 days - ask at Consortium UK for more details - cost 5,000 baht.
*note that some departments at these universities do not accept WELT.
Before you take the WELT
-
We strongly advise that you take a good quality English course (such as an IELTS preparation course which will give you relevant practice in grammar, writing and reading). Before you take the WELT we recommend that you already have an IELTS score of 5.5 or TOEFL 500/173/61. You can get advice and assistance about WELT at Consortium UK, but there are practice tests on the official website:
www2.warwick.ac.uk/go/welt
- Try to practice and use English as often as you can - read easy to understand English books (e.g. the Ladybird series), read books and magazines (like The Economist, Time, Newsweek) about topics you are interested in, browse in bookshops like Asia Books and Bookazine, watch English soundtrack movies, watch the BBC, National Geographic and Discovery Channel on television, watch English Premier League football on television and cheer your favourite team in English (or shout bad things in English at teams you don't like!!!), talk in English with your friends, write a diary of daily events (an excellent way to practice the past tense, too!!), marry your English teacher …… !!! - no, perhaps not; you might find someone better in the UK!
