Bath: The Royal Crescent

Profile
The University of Bath was founded and awarded its Royal Charter in 1966, but has origins that go back to 1856. It has become increasingly popular with Thai students in recent years and there is now a strong and active group of Thai Bath Alumni. There are three Faculties: Engineering and Design, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science, plus the School of Management and the School of Health. The University is very proud of its reputation for teaching and research and their relevance to the challenges and innovations of today’s modern world.

Bath’s 2010 ranking in the “The Sunday Times” is 11, and it has always been ranked in the top 20 Overall in the UK in “The Times Good University Guide”- examples of 2010 rankings are Accounting & Finance (1), Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (7), Architecture (13), Biological Sciences (12), Business Studies (4), Civil Engineering (8), Computer Science (11), Economics (12), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (11), Mathematics (9), Mechanical Engineering (7), Pharmacology (6), Politics (17), Psychology (5), Social Work (2), Sociology (7) and Sports Science (7). The University also has its own English Language Centre www.bath.ac.uk/elc that offers a variety of courses including full-time English for University Study and Pre-MBA/MSc Management courses. In addition to general Pre-sessional English for those who need to improve before starting degree programmes, Bath English Language Centre also offers 10 and 5-week pre-sessional courses specifically for postgraduate students entering the School of Management; the Pre-MBA/MSc Management courses PMBS 4 and PMBS 5. The staff at the International Office, headed by Andy Howman, are always especially keen to hear from Thai students.

Thai Bath student Merinda Thirakornrath says:

Merinda
Willa Cather once said, "Some memories are realities, and are better than anything that can ever happen to one again". If anyone asks me about the best decision I have ever made, I will undoubtedly say 'coming to Bath.' My memories of Bath started in October 2005 when I arrived here as a new MSc in Management student. Having lived in many foreign countries far away from my home in Thailand, I was well aware of what to expect when arriving in a new city. However, coming to Bath was different, as I did not know that I was about to embark upon some of the best experiences that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

It has been my dream for as long as I can remember to study in an excellent university situated in a beautiful city, and Bath offers me just that. The university ranks as one of the best in England with many top fields such as Management and Engineering. The well-equipped facilities, such as its modern library and state-of-the-art sports village, make the learning environment more welcoming for everyone. The beauty of this world-heritage city also makes the residents here feel happy and content.

Being completely satisfied here, I did not think twice about placing Bath as my first choice when applying for my PhD programme after completing my MSc. Nobody knows how grateful I was when Bath accepted me as one of their MPhil/PhD students. The helpful staff encourage me and other students strive to achieve our potential and satisfy the university’s high academic standards. Of course being successful requires a good work-life balance, and the students and I are able to find time to go out and enjoy ourselves. Movies, international eateries, and nearby famous tourist attractions such as London, Oxford, and Cambridge – not to mention the nearby outlet shopping mall – all help us to make the most of our spare time. The availability of buses that specifically serve the university also makes transportation very convenient.

My time at Bath flies by quickly and happily. I hope that anyone who comes here will love it as much as I do. I can confidently say that my time in Bath is the happiest time of my life. As Marcus Tulius Cicero, a Roman statesman, lawyer, and philosopher once said, “Memory is the treasury and guardian of all things.” I will treasure my precious memories of Bath, and use them as a source of strength and support in my personal life and future career.

Location

Bath is in Southwestern England near Bristol. There are few cities that can match Bath for historical interest – it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, particularly for its famous Roman “baths” (natural hot springs which gave the city its name). As well as being one of the most interesting, elegant and sophisticated cities in the UK, it is a spectacularly beautiful city, which stands on the picturesque River Avon. There is a wonderful selection of top-quality restaurants and historic old pubs, plus a good variety of hotels. The city is surrounded by delightful rural countryside and has excellent transportation links. London is only an hour and a half away by train and it is close to the M4 and M5 Motorways. You can fly from Thailand on KLM via Amsterdam to Bristol Airport and take a taxi direct to Bath, or you can fly to London Heathrow Airport and take either the National Express coach direct to Bath or take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington and then train direct to Bath. The University campus was completely purpose-built on a green area above the gorgeous city and there is a regular bus service between the two.
A Thai Bath student says:

“My academic career at Bath began as a Master of Science student in Automotive Engineering. I chose Bath because of its international reputation for teaching and research. Moving from undergraduate to postgraduate studies can be a daunting step. Postgraduate study is different to undergraduate study as the emphasis is very much on self-directed learning. I worried that I would be ‘abandoned’ to work alone. However my course was so structured that I never felt cut off and I was well supported in my academic work. Whilst pursuing my degree I was provided with a very supportive network, which enabled me to adjust to my new surroundings, facilitated my academic growth and allowed me to gain invaluable research skills. I have found lecturers at Bath to be approachable and very willing to support students according to their individual academic needs.

I looked at other institutions in the UK but was impressed with Bath’s location and campus. Bath offers excellent resources to support postgraduate study with a well-stocked library and online resources. This has made the transition to postgraduate study both challenging and enjoyable. Another key reason for choosing Bath is that its high quality researchers were also teaching on the course, rather then being wheeled out for the occasional guest lecture!

The location of the University means that Town, Shopping centre, Restaurants and Bars are all within easy reach. When I first came to Bath, I thought that the campus was beautiful and the environment friendly. I stayed on campus where I had a beautiful view from my windows. Apart from this, I have also made lots of good international friends on campus. Although, I have had to be away from my home country for a long time, I have never felt lonely at Bath. My experience at Bath will be unforgettable. I shall continue to enjoy the remainder of my time here”

Facilities
Bath was ranked No 1 for Student Facilities Spending by The Times Good University Guide 2004 (and No 3 in both 2005 and 2006, and No 4 in 2007!). The superb Library and Learning Centre, in the heart of the campus, is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during semesters. This is a rare feature in universities, although you are not expected to study for 24 hours a day!!! The Centre boasts around 500,000 books and periodicals, plus 400 PCs and a Web-based Catalogue. Computing services are first-rate with all the latest word-processing, database and spreadsheet applications available with laser printers and scanners. The English Sports Village, opened in 2004, has excellent sports and fitness facilities, including a 50-metre swimming pool, gymnasiums and outdoor facilities, plus a new indoor sports complex and more multi-purpose sports courts for indoor athletics and tennis.

Accomodation And Welfare
The online application process for University residences is now very quick and easy. All new, single, first-year students are guaranteed a University room (subject to a deadline of 31st July 2010). There is a wide range of very modern self-catering on-campus accommodation, plus many University properties in the city - many students actually prefer to have accommodation in the lovely city (and then either walk or take the bus to the campus). If you do not want to cook, there is a variety of restaurants and cafes on campus, plus a food shop and general store. The University is particularly good for its care services. The Medical and Dental Centre offers 24-hour cover. There is a good counselling service with confidential help available, plus a careers advisory service. Bath takes its sport very seriously, with outstanding facilities, such as the Human Performance and Fitness Centre.

A Thai Bath student says:

“Bath is one of the most interesting, elegant and vibrant cities in the UK. The University of Bath itself is built on a volcano!!! Inactive of course, but what it does give is the splendors of a panoramic view of Bath. There are also many outdoor activities to enjoy. All international students are provided with 1st class accommodation either in town or on campus. Culture seems to be the middle name of Bath; the students are all friendly and willing to help each other no matter where they are from. I now have a global network of friends that I can turn to regularly for invaluable help, information, or just reminisce! The staff and professors in Bath are just as friendly and very supportive; there is minimum student lecturer divide and everyone here works as a team. Whilst studying in Bath, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope that you will too”

The climate is among the warmest in the UK, so you Thai students might like that! With roots going back to 1855, the University of Exeter was granted its Royal Charter in 1955. Specialist areas include Business (particularly Finance), Computer Science, Drama, Economics, Education, Finance, Geotechnics, International Relations, Law and Mining Engineering. Location
Exeter is located in Devon, one of the loveliest areas in the UK, surrounded by beautiful countryside with sandy beaches, national parks and unspoilt rural villages. Just take a look at the photos and you will want to go there. It is in the Southwest of England, with excellent road and rail links (2½ hours to London). The Exeter in Cornwall campus is located at Penryn near Falmouth, in a wonderful location overlooking the River Fal. From Thailand, you can fly to London Heathrow Airport and take either a National Express coach direct to Exeter or take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington station and then go direct to Exeter. Exeter has its own airport with many flights to UK and European destinations. There are sea ferries to France and Spain from nearby Plymouth.

Ms Sawita Ditayont - PhD in Drama 2007-2010

"Exeter is a very nice town. People here are very friendly. The university has a very beautiful campus and the staff are very supportive especially to international students. The town is small and quiet which I think it is very suitable to study. However, even though the town is not that big, you can find everything you want here, pubs, good restaurants, shops (We just had new shopping street this year, Ye!) etc.  In case, you want to enjoy "big city" life, you can go to London in only two and half hours by direct train. So it won't be a problem if you want to enjoy your life on weekends and come back to have quiet study life during the week time.

The weather in Exeter is warmer than in London (and that is another reason why I chose to study here). Each year, there will be many Thai students who come to study here, so you don't have to worry that you will feel lonely here. There are also around 10 PhD students who study here at the moment and they (including me of course) are very nice and friendly and can help you with any problems you have to face when you arrive here.

As far as I know, Thai students do not have any problems studying here. Actually many get very high scores in class. Because there are so many international students come to study at Univerisity of Exeter, there is a lot of support to international students like in-sessional English language courses that can help you improve your English during the term time. There is also international office with staff there who are very lovely and will help you deal with any problems you get during the time you stay here.

So for all above reasons, I recommend you to consider University of Exeter as one of your choices.

Good luck."

Sawita

Note from Consortium UK – she has specifically asked for emails of students who will be coming to Exeter so she can give help and advice and she has also told me that there will soon be an official Thai Society at Exeter, so if any one wants to contact them the email is: exeterthaisoc@hotmail.com

Katawut Chuasiripattana - PhD in Physics, University of Exeter

I came to Exeter after studying for my BSc in Physics at Mahidol University in Bangkok and for my MSc at Newcastle University in Australia, after which I was employed as a Lecturer in Physics at Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok. I joined the research group at the University of Exeter concerned with the electronic properties of semi-conductor surfaces. The facilities for research in the School of Physics are excellent. The University campus is very beautiful and is an excellent environment for studying. I have been pleased with my accommodation close to the campus and I have found that the cost of living here is very reasonable compared with other cities in the UK. Exeter is a safe city and I have easily made friends with other international students as well as with English students.

Liverpool - European Capital of Culture 2008

Profile
Liverpool Management School

As a member of the Russell Group of 20 leading research Universities, the University of Liverpool is at the forefront of academic provision. Research is vital to the University, with staff at the cutting edge of knowledge and students constantly involved in new developments. Liverpool is the original “red brick” university, and retains the feeling of tradition in the centre of a modern and vibrant city and was honoured to be chosen as European Capital of Culture 2008. Sciences and Engineering are really strong areas at Liverpool; for example, where many universities are reducing commitments to Chemistry, Liverpool has invested 17 million pounds in new facilities. Liverpool is a world leader in Veterinary Science/Medicine and ranks 1st in the UK in The Times Good University Guide 2010. Other strong areas are Architecture, Biological Sciences, Civil Engineering, Dentistry, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Geology, Health & Medical Sciences, Law, Manufacturing Engineering, Management, Logistics/Operations & Supply Chain Management, Nano-technology, Pharmacology, Physics and Philosophy. The English Language Unit www.liv.ac.uk/english/elu provides Pre-sessional English courses of 20, 16, 10 and 6 weeks, successful completion of which guarantees your place on a degree course. Links with Thailand are increasing all the time, and in 2006 the University was most happy to bestow an Honorary Doctoral Degree on Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn. The University is now proud to offer the most prestigious Princess Sirindhorn Scholarship

Peeraporn applied to Liverpool using the services of Consortium UK She was the University of Liverpool Princess Sirindhorn Scholarship winner in 2008/9

Hi! My name is Peeraporn from Thailand. I am studying in Postgraduate one-year-taught program in Operations and Supply Chain Management.

My Course
My course, MSc in Operations and Supply Chain Management, is a one-year program in the University of Liverpool Management School. It provides me a professional understanding of the process of developing operations strategy and managing supply chain activities which will definitely benefit for my future career. I am impressed with the “research-based” teaching methods that allow me to do my own research and develop my analytical thinking on the interesting topic in operations and supply chain management.

My University
Undoubtedly, the University of Liverpool is reputable especially in its high standard of teaching, qualified faculties and much student support. Besides, because this campus located near the centre of Liverpool city, it is very convenient to access to city facilities such as restaurants, shops and train station. This university provides everything for the students such as state-of-the art libraries, indoor and outdoor sporting facilities and students’ union in order to maximize students’ potential and successfully gain their professional qualifications.

My Liverpool
Liverpool is totally different from Thailand. My first impression was the spectacular buildings that are all around this city. Second, the Liverpool accent is really unique! It may take some times to get used to. This city is quiet, friendly and lively. I not only have a good experience in my education matter but also can broaden my horizons and socialize here.

Favourite place: I love both Chinatown and City Centre. In China Town, of course, I can find most of Thai products and Asian ingredients. Also, there are many delicious Chinese restaurants there. Besides, I like to go shopping in the Liverpool City Centre. However, because most of the shops here close around 5.30pm, it is essential to plan nicely before going out.

My Top Tips
  • Do not bring too many coats because you can buy the cheaper and warmer ones here. Besides, they take up space in your baggage.
  • Practise cooking some easy dishes before you come here because it is cheaper and tastier to cook by yourself.
  • If you are not good at cooking (like me), bring the “instant noodle” and “your flavour instant Thai ingredients” as much as you can. It will help you in your first month.
  • Do not bring bedding pack and cookeries because they are heavy and not expensive to buy here.
  • Be friendly and positive. Join your classmates for some parties or activities. It is a good opportunity to make new friends from all around the world, here!
  • Try to manage your own time well. You should balance both of your study and free time

Pawitra Theabrat - MSc Advanced Computer Science at the University of Liverpool
Pawitra

I am the 2007 HRH Princess Sirindhorn University of Liverpool Scholar, studying MSc Advanced Computer Science.

There are many special things at the University of Liverpool that I can’t find in Thailand. First of all, it is a city-based campus, so it is easy to walk to the city centre, train station, Chinatown and lots more. Secondly, there are excellent facilities like the sports centre, for example, there are a wide variety of classes provided for all members for free. In addition, the libraries are amazing because they are operated by computers which make it faster and easier to find, borrow and renew books.

Although my course has just been introduced this year, there is a variety of subjects which thoroughly cover the areas of most MSc students’ interests and expertise. In addition to the high quality of teaching, I am very impressed by the state-of-the-art equipment and applications which give free and quick access to all electronic resources for self-studying and researching.

My first impression is that it is such a university city because you can see students everywhere! Besides, it is a quieter and more proper place for studying compared to Bangkok. Because of that way, you can be more concentrated and less distracted. However, there are many good places for shopping or travelling and amazing nightlife here.

My favourite place is Chinatown, simply because I can buy Thai products especially food and seasoning there. There are also some Chinese restaurants which make me feel as if I was eating in a Chinese restaurant in Thailand, as food here tastes a lot different!

Location
Liverpool: The Beatles Story
Liverpool is west of Manchester in the Northwest of England. It is really a seaside port city, being on the banks of the River Mersey which runs directly into the Irish Sea. There are excellent rail, road and air links (Liverpool has its own John Lennon Airport with destinations all over Europe, but from Thailand it is best to fly to Manchester Airport and take the train to Liverpool Lime Street Station, which is very close to the University). The University campus is in the heart of the city of Liverpool, surely one of the most famous cities in the world, and one which has more museums, galleries and theatres than any other area outside London. Liverpool was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Sight in 2004. Liverpool is the home of 2 English Premier League football clubs – Liverpool and Everton (Liverpool people – affectionately known as “Scousers” – are typically “blue” if they support Everton or “red” if they support Liverpool). For horse-racing fans (and possibly gambling fans too!), Liverpool’s Aintree course is the home of the world-famous Grand National. Music is also very important in Liverpool, being the birthplace of The Beatles and the music scene is still thriving today. With 50,000 students in the city, the cost of living is quite low, and in a recent survey by the Royal Bank of Scotland, Liverpool was found to be the 4th cheapest student city in the UK.

Facilities
The 36 million pound redevelopment of the Engineering department (with its superb Active Learning Laboratory for students), 15 million pound campus development, and 17 million pound enhancement of the Sydney Jones Library, clearly show the determination of the University to continue to improve and develop its world-class facilities. There are computer centres in the main libraries and at various locations all over the campus, including the Brownlow Hill Centre which is open 24 hours. The newly extended Sports Centre has a 26-metre swimming pool, 2 sports halls, a climbing wall, a dance studio and 4 squash courts. In addition to sports facilities, there is a wide variety of student clubs and societies, including the Thai Students Society – check out the website www.liverpool.onlinethai.com

Accomodation
There is a large variety of good and reasonably priced accommodation available within easy walking distance of the campus, shops, restaurants and theatres. The University guarantees accommodation to all postgraduate students who apply before 30 June 2010. All the University Halls of Residence have broadband Internet connections which also offer access to the University networks.

"Life in Warwick is simply fantastic and never disappointing. Once I stepped on to Warwick Campus, I really fitted into this place in every aspect, with the great environment and wide range of academic facilities from the library to learning grid.

First remembrance during the orientation week is just full of fun. Although studying here is extremely different from what I am used to in Thailand, it really gives me the motivation towards my career prospect and develops my learning skill with the high caliber professors from both Warwick Business School and the Department of Economics. I really enjoy the multicultural environment in which people from all over the world get together and there are always endless stories to share among us.

Warwick does not only enrich students academically, but also provides the foundation for the career prospect with the exclusive career services and company presentations to ensure the employment opportunities for Warwick graduates."

Akaraya Sirawongprasert
BA Politics with International Studies

"The University of Warwick is regarded as one of the most prestigious universites here in the UK, with a particularly strong Politics Department. This reputation was a key reason why I was so attracted to studying here. Once term started, my love for Warwick grew because of the friendly culture and immense range of activities. Since Warwick is a campus university, you feel very close to everyone. I have made lifetime friends from all over the world.

The Students' Union has made my time here so worthwhile. You have endless opportunities to try new things, or continue what you enjoy doing. For instance, I love volleyball and have joined the Warwick Volleyball Team, where we compete against other universities across the UK

My advice to those applying to Warwick would be to open up and gain as many experiences as you can whilst you are here. Life here is a truly spectacular journey to fully develop your potential in every aspect possible."

Piyanee Sangpongpittaya
MSc Supply Engineering and Logistics

"Coming to Warwick is one of the best decisions and experiences in my life. Warwick is more than a university. After a comprehensive class, you can still refresh yourself at the Sports Center, or meet your friends and socialize at the Union. The trips and events organised by the International Office to places such as Oxford and Stratford-Upon-Avon are a great way to spend your weekend. I have also taken part in Host UK, which gave me the opportunity to experience traditional British culture.

Each year, the University of Warwick provides a range of awards for students from all over the world. I was lucky enough to be awarded the Thailand Postgraduate Scholarship, which is a valuable achievement and has become a great motivation for me to succeed in my academic goal at Warwick. I believe that my year and experience in Warwick will further my future life and career."

Jirayuth Niyommalai
BSc Management

"Easily put, the three main reasons why I chose the University of Warwick to continue my education: its academic reputation, its campus environment and its international community.

Warwick's prestigious Business School has achieved top 5 rankings for some time. I find that the variety of modules available here offers great benefits for students. The diverse groups of staff who come from various parts of the world have also lived up to the high teaching ranking category.

I am amazed by the level of diversity at Warick. I have made friends from all over the world, friends whose countries I have visited, and friends who have come to visit me in Thailand during holidays.

My advice to you is to take up all the opportunities available to you here in Warwick and experience as much as you can whilst you still have the time. Do not forget to live a balanced life and remember to work hard and play hard"
