Profile
The University of Bath was founded and awarded its Royal Charter in 1966, but has origins that go back
to 1856. It has become increasingly popular with Thai students in recent years and there is now a strong
and active group of Thai Bath Alumni. It is one of the very top UK universities and is very proud of its
reputation for teaching and research. Being awarded “University of the Year 2011/12” by “The
Sunday Times” proves this stature. It has always been ranked in the top 20 Overall in the UK by
“The Times Good University Guide”.
There are three Faculties: Engineering and Design, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science, plus the
School of Management and the School of Health. Examples of current rankings in “The Times Good
University Guide 2012” are: Accounting & Finance (3), Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering (8),
Architecture (2), Biological Sciences (11), Business Studies (5), Civil Engineering (3), Computer
Science (13), Economics (8), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (7), Mathematics (7), Mechanical
Engineering (10), Pharmacology (5), Politics (5), Psychology (4), Social Work (1), Social Policy (3),
Sociology (6) and Sports Science (6). The University also has its own English Language Centre www.bath.ac.uk/elc that offers a variety of courses including full-time
English for University Study and Pre-MBA/MSc Management courses. In addition to general Pre-sessional
English for those who need to improve before starting degree programmes, Bath English Language Centre
also offers 10 and 5-week pre-sessional courses specifically for postgraduate students entering the
School of Management; the Pre-MBA/MSc Management, PMBS courses. The Head of the International Office,
Andy Howman, regularly visits Thailand.
Thai Bath student Merinda Thirakornrath says:
Willa Cather once said, "Some memories are realities, and are
better than anything that can ever happen to one again".
If anyone asks me about the best
decision I have ever made, I will undoubtedly say 'coming to Bath.' My memories of Bath
started in October 2005 when I arrived here as a new MSc in Management student. Having lived in many
foreign countries far away from my home in Thailand, I was well aware of what to expect when arriving
in a new city. However, coming to Bath was different, as I did not know that I was about to embark
upon some of the best experiences that I will cherish for the rest of my life.
It has been my dream for as long as I can remember to study in an excellent university situated in a
beautiful city, and Bath offers me just that. The university ranks as one of the best in England with
many top fields such as Management and Engineering. The well-equipped facilities, such as its modern
library and state-of-the-art sports village, make the learning environment more welcoming for
everyone. The beauty of this world-heritage city also makes the residents here feel happy and
content.
Being completely satisfied here, I did not think twice about placing Bath as my first choice when
applying for my PhD programme after completing my MSc. Nobody knows how grateful I was when Bath
accepted me as one of their MPhil/PhD students. The helpful staff encourage me and other students
strive to achieve our potential and satisfy the university's high academic standards. Of course
being successful requires a good work-life balance, and the students and I are able to find time to
go out and enjoy ourselves. Movies, international eateries, and nearby famous tourist attractions
such as London, Oxford, and Cambridge - not to mention the nearby outlet shopping mall - all help us
to make the most of our spare time. The availability of buses that specifically serve the university
also makes transportation very convenient.
My time at Bath flies by quickly and happily. I hope that anyone who comes here will love it as much
as I do. I can confidently say that my time in Bath is the happiest time of my life. As Marcus Tulius
Cicero, a Roman statesman, lawyer, and philosopher once said, "Memory is the treasury and
guardian of all things."
I will treasure my precious memories of Bath, and use them as a
source of strength and support in my personal life and future career.
Location

Bath is in Southwestern England near Bristol. There are few cities that can match
Bath for historical interest – it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, particularly for its famous Roman
“baths” (natural hot springs which gave the city its name). As well as being one of the most
interesting, elegant and sophisticated cities in the UK, it is a spectacularly beautiful city, which
stands on the picturesque River Avon. There is a wonderful selection of top-quality restaurants and
historic old pubs, plus a good variety of hotels. The city is surrounded by delightful rural countryside
and has excellent transportation links. London is only an hour and a half away by fast and frequent
train and it is close to the M4 and M5 Motorways. You can fly from Thailand on KLM via Amsterdam to
Bristol Airport and take a taxi direct to Bath, or you can fly to London Heathrow Airport and take
either the National Express coach direct to Bath or take the Heathrow Express train to London Paddington
and then train direct to Bath. The University campus was completely purpose-built on a green area above
the gorgeous city and there is a regular bus service between the two.
A Thai Bath student says:

“My academic career at Bath began as a Master of Science student in
Automotive Engineering. I chose Bath because of its international reputation for teaching and
research. Moving from undergraduate to postgraduate studies can be a daunting step. Postgraduate
study is different to undergraduate study as the emphasis is very much on self-directed learning. I
worried that I would be ‘abandoned’ to work alone. However my course was so structured that I never
felt cut off and I was well supported in my academic work. Whilst pursuing my degree I was provided
with a very supportive network, which enabled me to adjust to my new surroundings, facilitated my
academic growth and allowed me to gain invaluable research skills. I have found lecturers at Bath to
be approachable and very willing to support students according to their individual academic needs.
I looked at other institutions in the UK but was impressed with Bath’s location and campus. Bath
offers excellent resources to support postgraduate study with a well-stocked library and online
resources. This has made the transition to postgraduate study both challenging and enjoyable. Another
key reason for choosing Bath is that its high quality researchers were also teaching on the course,
rather then being wheeled out for the occasional guest lecture!
The location of the University means that Town, Shopping centre, Restaurants and Bars are all within
easy reach. When I first came to Bath, I thought that the campus was beautiful and the environment
friendly. I stayed on campus where I had a beautiful view from my windows. Apart from this, I have
also made lots of good international friends on campus. Although, I have had to be away from my home
country for a long time, I have never felt lonely at Bath. My experience at Bath will be
unforgettable. I shall continue to enjoy the remainder of my time here”
Sitthiraj Wattanasirivej - MSc Automotive Engineering
Facilities
In the past few years Bath has invested heavily in new facilities and accommodation. The superb
Library and Learning Centre, in the heart of the campus, is open
24 hours a day, 7 days a week
during semesters and boasts state-of-the-art computer services. There is a variety of restaurants and
cafes on campus, plus a food shop (including an Oriental shop) and a general convenience store, plus
various bars which will show all the top sports. There are 3 banks on campus (Barclays, NatWest &
Santander), with branches of HSBC in the city. The English Sports Village (currently being used as a
training centre for the 2012 London Olympics) was opened in 2004 and has excellent fitness facilities,
including a 50-metre swimming pool, gymnasiums and outdoor facilities, plus a new indoor sports complex
and more multi-purpose sports courts for indoor athletics and tennis.
Accomodation And Welfare
The online application process for University residences is now very quick and easy. All new, single,
first-year students are guaranteed a University room (subject to a deadline of 31st July 2012). There is
a wide range of very modern self-catering on-campus accommodation, plus many University properties in
the city - many students actually prefer to have accommodation in the lovely city (and then either walk
or take the bus to the campus – buses run to 03.00 am!!). Off-campus properties popular with Thai
students are Thornbank and Cleveland, which are both near to bus stops. The University is particularly
good for its care services. The Medical and Dental Centre offers 24-hour cover. There is a good
counselling service with confidential help available, plus a careers advisory service. Bath takes its
sport very seriously, with outstanding facilities, such as the Human Performance and Fitness Centre.
A Thai Bath student says:
"Bath is one of the most interesting, elegant and vibrant cities in the UK. The University of
Bath itself is built on a volcano!!! Inactive of course, but what it does give is the splendors of a
panoramic view of Bath. There are also many outdoor activities to enjoy. All international students
are provided with 1st class accommodation either in town or on campus. Culture seems to be the middle
name of Bath; the students are all friendly and willing to help each other no matter where they are
from. I now have a global network of friends that I can turn to regularly for invaluable help,
information, or just reminisce! The staff and professors in Bath are just as friendly and very
supportive; there is minimum student lecturer divide and everyone here works as a team. Whilst
studying in Bath, I have thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope that you will too".

A Superb Environment in which to Live and Work in beautiful Southwest England www.exeter.ac.uk/
Profile

The University of Exeter is probably the most attractive campus in the UK and
the delightful city is rated as one of the best places to live in the country. The climate is among the
warmest in the UK, so that is a sure bonus for Thai students! With roots going back to 1855, the
University of Exeter was granted its Royal Charter in 1955. There are about 15,000 students, which makes
Exeter big enough to be fun, but small enough to be friendly and personal. The University has an
excellent academic reputation and offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate studies from its
six colleges: The Business School; the College of Engineering, Mathematics & Physical Sciences; the
College of Humanities; the College of Life & Environmental Sciences; the College of Social Sciences &
International Studies; the Peninsula College of Medicine & Dentistry. Specialist areas include Business
(particularly Accounting & Finance), Computer Science, Drama, Economics, English, Geotechnics,
International Relations, Law, Mining Engineering, Sport Science and Tourism Policy.
The University of Exeter also has a superb new 100-million pound campus near Falmouth in Cornwall, where
some areas of Biosciences, Environmental Sciences, English and Geography are taught.
The Times
Good University Guide 2012 ranks Exeter 10th overall in the UK (including 7th for Accounting &
Finance, 10th for Business Studies, 2nd for Sports Science, 4th for Drama, 6th for English, 6th for
General Engineering, 9th for Politics, 12th for Economics, 11th for Psychology and 18th for Physics).
Furthermore, students voted Exeter 6th most satisfying in the National Student Survey. For international
students who require academic and English language preparation courses, the INTO University of Exeter
English Language Centre
www.exeter.ac.uk/into has courses
from short summer and Pre-sessional courses to 30-week academic preparation courses. Successful
completion of the Pre-sessional English course guarantees entry onto your degree programme.
Location
Exeter is located in Devon, one of the loveliest areas in the UK, surrounded by beautiful
countryside with sandy beaches, national parks and unspoilt rural villages. Just take a look at the
photos and you will want to go there. It is in the Southwest of England, with excellent road and rail
links (2½ hours to London). The Exeter in Cornwall campus is located at Penryn near Falmouth, in a
wonderful location overlooking the River Fal. From Thailand, you can fly to London Heathrow Airport and
take either a National Express coach direct to Exeter or take the Heathrow Express train to London
Paddington station and then go direct to Exeter. Exeter has its own airport with many flights to UK and
European destinations. There are sea ferries to France and Spain from nearby Plymouth.
Facilities
Open-access computer rooms are available 24-hours a day, with access to e-mail, the Internet and the
University’s data network from your own study bedroom. There is a free Helpdesk service for all
information technology users. The Library has over a million books and journals and subscribes to 3,000
periodicals, plus it has a large Audio-Visual section with specialist collections of CD-ROMs. Excellent
sports facilities, a supermarket, bank, bookshop, print and travel shops are all on campus, and the
University also enjoys its own TV and radio station, and a newspaper. There is a modern Health Centre
with full medical facilities as well as a Student Advice Centre. There is a full time international
student advisor.
Accomodation
High quality University accommodation on or near the campus is guaranteed to all unaccompanied
international students for the duration of their studies. Facilities vary from standard self-catering
flats to en suite rooms, but all rents include heating, lighting and water, and most study bedrooms have
a telephone with voice mail plus a data point for Internet / e-mail access.
Thai Exeter Student Profile 1 - Suthee Ploisawaschai
I am currently (2011-15) doing a PhD in Education at the Graduate School of Education, University
of Exeter. I also completed my Master’s Degree in Exeter too. Before I applied for my further study
with a great help from Consortium UK, I was a research assistant in the Learning Institute at King
Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi.
It is such a sheer delight to study at the University of Exeter, which is a leading research-led
university in the world. Moreover, I am honoured to get a scholarship from the University of Exeter,
which provides funding to support students financially. Besides, there are tutoring sessions and
English language support to help students academically. There are also many student-run societies to
join and to make friends and this helps us socially. These might be the reason why students rate the
University of Exeter as one of the best places to study in the UK in the National Student Survey.
Although Exeter is a small city, there is everything you need including department stores. What’s
more, we can experience some of the most beautiful countryside scenery in the UK. It’s never too far
to Stonehenge, coastlines and seaports where we can enjoy seafood and boat trips. There is also a
temple near Exeter where Thai Society students usually go to make merit.

Ms Sawita Ditayont - PhD in Drama 2007-2010
"Exeter is a very nice town. People here are very friendly. The university has a very
beautiful campus and the staff are very supportive especially to international students. The town is
small and quiet which I think it is very suitable to study. However, even though the town is not that
big, you can find everything you want here, pubs, good restaurants, shops (We just had new shopping
street this year, Ye!) etc. In case, you want to enjoy "big city" life, you can go to
London in only two and half hours by direct train. So it won't be a problem if you want to enjoy
your life on weekends and come back to have quiet study life during the week time.
he weather in Exeter is warmer than in London (and that is another reason why I chose to study here).
Each year, there will be many Thai students who come to study here, so you don't have to worry
that you will feel lonely here. There are also around 10 PhD students who study here at the moment
and they (including me of course) are very nice and friendly and can help you with any problems you
have to face when you arrive here.
As far as I know, Thai students do not have any problems studying here. Actually many get very high
scores in class. Because there are so many international students come to study at Univerisity of
Exeter, there is a lot of support to international students like in-sessional English language
courses that can help you improve your English during the term time. There is also international
office with staff there who are very lovely and will help you deal with any problems you get during
the time you stay here.
So for all above reasons, I recommend you to consider University of Exeter as one of your choices.
Good luck."

Katawut Chuasiripattana - PhD in Physics, University of Exeter
I came to Exeter after studying for my BSc in Physics at Mahidol University in Bangkok and for my
MSc at Newcastle University in Australia, after which I was employed as a Lecturer in Physics at
Srinakharinwirot University in Bangkok. I joined the research group at the University of Exeter
concerned with the electronic properties of semi-conductor surfaces. The facilities for research in
the School of Physics are excellent. The University campus is very beautiful and is an excellent
environment for studying. I have been pleased with my accommodation close to the campus and I have
found that the cost of living here is very reasonable compared with other cities in the UK. Exeter is
a safe city and I have easily made friends with other international students as well as with English
students.

Facilities
The thing that attracts many students to Warwick is the campus environment and its fantastic facilities.
These include the excellent University Library, the University Bookshop, the Computing Service Centre,
Warwick Arts Centre (one of the largest arts centres in the UK with 2 theatres, a cinema, a concert hall
and a specialized music centre), the Rootes Building (with comfortable bars and restaurants and Costa
Coffee to keep you awake!), and University House (which includes the popular Learning Grid and the
International Office). The Warwick Students' Union is one of the largest and most active in the UK
with over 250 societies to choose from - included in this there is a thriving and very active
Thai Society at Warwick, too (only English is spoken at meetings -
joke!!!), so you are sure to have some friends around - take a look at the website www.warwickthaisoc.co.uk. If you want to cook your own food, or if
you wish to buy ready-to-eat meals, the Costcutter supermarket has a good variety (with a new in-store
bakery too!), and there is also a huge Tesco superstore near the campus which is open 24/7. Sporting
facilities are first-rate, with over 60 acres (that's about 140 rai) of playing fields. There is
also the famous "Bear Rock" climbing wall, a brand new fitness suite and aerobics studio with
100 state of the art pieces of equipment, plus an Olymprene running track for that daily early-morning
jog before you attend lectures ……. !!!

"Life in Warwick is simply fantastic and never disappointing. Once I stepped on to Warwick
Campus, I really fitted into this place in every aspect, with the great environment and wide range of
academic facilities from the library to learning grid.
First remembrance during the orientation week is just full of fun. Although studying here is
extremely different from what I am used to in Thailand, it really gives me the motivation towards my
career prospect and develops my learning skill with the high caliber professors from both Warwick
Business School and the Department of Economics. I really enjoy the multicultural environment in
which people from all over the world get together and there are always endless stories to share among
us.
Warwick does not only enrich students academically, but also provides the foundation for the career
prospect with the exclusive career services and company presentations to ensure the employment
opportunities for Warwick graduates."
Akaraya Sirawongprasert
BA Politics with International Studies
"The University of Warwick is regarded as one of the most prestigious universites here in the
UK, with a particularly strong Politics Department. This reputation was a key reason why I was so
attracted to studying here. Once term started, my love for Warwick grew because of the friendly
culture and immense range of activities. Since Warwick is a campus university, you feel very close to
everyone. I have made lifetime friends from all over the world.
The Students' Union has made my time here so worthwhile. You have endless opportunities to try
new things, or continue what you enjoy doing. For instance, I love volleyball and have joined the
Warwick Volleyball Team, where we compete against other universities across the UK
My advice to those applying to Warwick would be to open up and gain as many experiences as you can
whilst you are here. Life here is a truly spectacular journey to fully develop your potential in
every aspect possible."

"Coming to Warwick is one of the best decisions and experiences in my life. Warwick is more than
a university. After a comprehensive class, you can still refresh yourself at the Sports Center, or
meet your friends and socialize at the Union. The trips and events organised by the International
Office to places such as Oxford and Stratford-Upon-Avon are a great way to spend your weekend. I have
also taken part in Host UK, which gave me the opportunity to experience traditional British culture.
Each year, the University of Warwick provides a range of awards for students from all over the world.
I was lucky enough to be awarded the Thailand Postgraduate Scholarship, which is a valuable
achievement and has become a great motivation for me to succeed in my academic goal at Warwick. I
believe that my year and experience in Warwick will further my future life and career."
Jirayuth Niyommalai

"Easily put, the three main reasons why I chose the University of Warwick to continue my
education: its academic reputation, its campus environment and its international community.
Warwick's prestigious Business School has achieved top 5 rankings for some time. I find that the
variety of modules available here offers great benefits for students. The diverse groups of staff who
come from various parts of the world have also lived up to the high teaching ranking category.
I am amazed by the level of diversity at Warick. I have made friends from all over the world, friends
whose countries I have visited, and friends who have come to visit me in Thailand during holidays.
My advice to you is to take up all the opportunities available to you here in Warwick and experience
as much as you can whilst you still have the time. Do not forget to live a balanced life and remember
to
work hard and play hard"
